Johnson County has several local farmers market. They tend to open in early to mid April each year and sell flowers for the most part. Then in May as the vegetable season comes in. You'll begin to see the freshest vegetables and plants for your gardens! Did you know that farmers markets started as far back to 1857 in the Kansas City area. The City Market in the River Market area of Kansas City MO was the first. That was during the days of the steamboats on the Missouri River. It's been a way to connect the small business, small local farmers & the consumers to some of the best locally grown products.
Local Farmers Markets
Overland Park
There are 2 farmers markets. The Historic Downtown Market and the Blue Valley Recreation division. The Overland Park downtown farmers market is located between 79th & 80th Streets just west of Marty & Metcalf. The farmers market opens in early April, the hours on Saturdays mornings are 6:30 am to 1 pm. Then in early June, the market opens on Wed mornings, 7:30 am to 1 pm. On Saturday mornings, from 10:30-12:00 noon there is usually a variety of entertainment while you browse the vendors! This year (2013) a homegrown item will be featured each market day! If a vendor is selling that item - they will have a green flag at their booth! The idea is to help educate you on what's seasonal & what's homegrown in season!
Merriam
Merriam has their own covered pavillon for the Sat morning Farmers Market Place. It is from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturday. Just behind the pavillon, is a city park. Several picnic benches to enjoy the morning breakfast & fresh fruits from the market. Plus each week - there is music to enjoy while shopping!
